Detroit.

Just finished reading an article about a french street artist murdered in Detroit by 3 teens, one of the suspects include a 14-year old boy.

Fucked up situation with a fucked up end..

Before we all agree that murder is wrong & all that, let’s THINK about a few other things…

-What was Mr. Bellini doing near the Brewster projects?
-I’ve never been, never saw a need to snap pics of impoverished black ppl, seen that all my life
-and of all things, skateboarding? This is Detroit, clearly that was an easy target.

Since growing up & moving back to my beloved home city, I know where to go & not to go.

The transplants of Detroit & those who come visit & travel the city in awe if it’s ‘ruins’, naively DO NOT.

Detroit is popular right now, we are being watched under the careful eye of the world on how to bounce back through the worse bankruptcy America has ever seen. With all the recent influx of (white) people (non-Detroiters) receiving first dibs on dirt cheap land and opportunity, there’s a skewed perception on how to navigate the city. So, this is for yall..cuz obviously you all need help.

White Residents aka Transplants (non POC) & travelers (POC/Non POC):

DO NOT SKATE BOARD IN THE PROJECTS!!!

DO NOT WALK IN/NEAR OR AROUND THE PROJECTS UNLESS YOU KNOW A FAMILY THAT LIVES THERE & the FAMILY is cool with the ppl in the hood.

IF THERE ARENT ANY STREET LIGHTS AROUND AT NIGHT, YOU SHOULDN’T BE THERE

STOP WALKING YOUR DOG/JOGGING IN CASS CORRIDOR

DONT COME TO THE HOOD LIQUOR STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL PROBABLY GET ROBBED.

Saving Face (2012), acid attacks on women in Pakistan

Meanwhile, in America, feminists are complaining about how dress codes are oppressive.
You idiots have never experienced oppression, and pray you never do, because this is what it looks like.

As a South Asian American feminist, let me remind everyone that oppression is not a competition.
Just because we fight one type of sexism doesn’t mean we don’t care about other instances of sexism that don’t affect us directly in our day to day lives.
My heart goes out to this woman and the hundreds of other victims like her. I want to educate people about these kinds of incidents. I support organizations that help women like this.
You may think that dress code issues are trivial, but they are related to a larger issue of women’s bodily autonomy, which affects women’s health and safety.
So please, let’s try to bring awareness and bring about change instead of insulting entire groups of people because they are facing issues that are less scary than the one presented.
